Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, of Puerto Rican descent, and pride of the Bronx has won her Democratic primary against Michelle Caruso-Cabrera, CNN projects.
Ms. Ocasio-Cortez, who has been famously nicknamed AOC (her initials), shocked the political world when she was elected to represent the 14th congressional district in New York.
According to CNN, “with nearly 75 percent of the scanners reported, has a significant lead over her challengers Michelle Caruso-Cabrera and Badrun Khan. The incumbent had 73 percent of the votes cast, with Caruso-Cabrera 20 percent and Badrun Khan 5 percent.”
At times the build-up to election day was contentious with Caruso-Cabrera, a former CNBC journalist, questioning AOC’s commitment to her constituents, and using the campaign rally call “AOC is MIA”.
AOC countered with her hard work to bring jobs to her district, her community canvassing, and her considerable work to change legislation to make programs that help the traditionally disenfranchised.
The 14th Congressional district comprises Astoria, Sunnyside, Woodside, Jackson Heights, Elmhurst, East Elmhurst, Corona, College Point, and portions of the eastern section of The Bronx.
