Those were the words uttered by Rep. Ted Yoho (R-Fla.) after walking away from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.).on the steps of the capitol building.
This came after a brief exchange, Rep. Ted Yoho (R-Fla.) walking down the eastside stairs, had just voted and approached Ocasio-Cortez as she was walking up the stairs to cast her vote.
In a charged exchange, overheard by a reporter, Yoho told Ocasio-Cortez she was “disgusting” for suggesting that poverty and unemployment are driving a spike in crime in New York City during the coronavirus pandemic.
The Florida Representative continued by saying “You are out of your freaking mind,”
Ocasio-Cortez commonly referred to as AOC, replied, telling Yoho he was being “rude.”
Both Yoho and AOC continued their way when Yoho, joined by Rep. Roger Williams (R-Texas), said to no one in particular “Fucking bitch,”.
Ocasio-Cortez, a liberal firebrand, and social media sensation is used to sharp attacks from the right, but this was different to AOC.
“That kind of confrontation hasn’t ever happened to me — ever,” she said. “I’ve never had that kind of abrupt, disgusting kind of disrespect levied at me.”
Yoho declined to discuss and simply said “No comment.”
Rep. Roger Williams (R-Texas), who was walking alongside Yoho, commented “I was actually thinking, as I was walking down the stairs, I was thinking about some issues I’ve got in my district that need to get done,” Williams said. “I don’t know what their topic was. There’s always a topic, isn’t there?”
A spokesman for Rep. Yoho commented “He did not call Rep. Ocasio-Cortez what has been reported in the Hill or any name for that matter. It sounds better for the Hill newspaper and gets more media attention to say he called her a name – which he did not do. It is unfortunate that Rep. Ocasio-Cortez is using this exchange to gain personal attention,”
The representative has apologized stating “its true that we disagree on policies and visions for America, but that does not mean we should be disrespectful.”
“I will commit to each of you that I will conduct myself from a place of passion and understanding that policy and political disagreement be vigorously debated with the knowledge that we approach the problems facing our nation with the betterment of the country in mind and the people we serve. I cannot apologize for my passion or for loving my God, my family and my country,”
But did continue to deny saying “fucking bitch”.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez did not accept the apology stating “I will not teach my nieces and young people watching that this an apology, and what they should learn to accept,”
“Yoho is refusing responsibility.”
AOC is up for reelection in 2020, Ted Yoho announced on December 10, 2019, he will not seek a fifth term.
