Monday and Tuesday night saw Tucker Carlson going after Senator Tammy Duckworth.
Carlson is the host of the highly-rated, Tucker Carlson Tonight, which broke the record for the highest-rated program in U.S. cable news history by garnering an average nightly audience of 4.33 million viewers.
Senator Tammy Duckworth, a Thai-American and democratic Senator for Illinois, lost both her legs fighting in the Iraq war and is a decorated veteran. Senator Duckworth has been added to the short-list as a potential vice-president nominee to join former Vice President Joe Biden on the democratic November ticket.
Mr. Carlson, questioned Senator Duckworth based on her Sunday morning interview on CNN’s “State of the Union”, in which she indicated there should be a dialogue about the removal of monuments of slave-owners, including George Washington.
Mr. Carlson stated that Senator Duckworth, born to a Thai mother of Chinese descent and a white-American veteran father, and Somali-born Representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, are “vandals”. At different points during the show Carlson also called Duckworth a “moran” a “coward” and a “fraud”.
He inferred they hate the United States. Mr. Carlson said “There are many of us here who do like this country,” as a graphic on the screen read, “We have to fight to preserve our nation & heritage.” Some people pointed out that the graphic represented the same sentiment as the white supremasist “14 word” slogan “we must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children.”
“We live here,” Carlson said. “We don’t want to destroy it. We have every right to fight to preserve our nation and our heritage and our culture.”
He also added, “And when vandals like Tammy Duckworth and Ilhan Omar tell us that we’re not allowed to question their patriotism, even as they scream about how horrible America is, we have every right to laugh in their faces, and we should,”
Lastly, Mr. Carlson said: “Let’s tear down our statues, rename our capital city Sharpton or Mandela and let the revolution continue. Tammy Duckworth is not a child, at least not technically; she is a sitting United States senator.”
Senator Duckworth’s heritage in the United States is deeply rooted. The senator’s ancestors have proudly served in the military as far back as the American Revolution, supported by genealogical records. She retired from the National Guard as a Lieutenant Colonel after receiving a purple heart, Air Medal and Army Commendation Medal.
President Trump shared a video clip of Mr. Carlson’s opening monologue on twitter.
This has led to a response from former Vice President Bident during a fundraising event with Senator Duckworth in attendance, “I can’t tell you how I felt today when I heard the president of the United States, Donald Trump, questioning your patriotism. I found it virtually disgusting, sickening.”
Biden went on to say “It’s a reflection of the depravity of what’s going on in the White House right now.”
